Ingredients

Steps

  • 1
    Heat oven to 350°F.
  • 2
In medium bowl, crumble cookie dough; stir or knead in flour until well mixed. (DO NOT EAT RAW COOKIE DOUGH AFTER COMBINING WITH FLOUR.) Shape dough into 36 (1-inch) balls. Roll balls in sugar. Place 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Discard any remaining sugar after rolling balls.
  • 3
Bake 11 to 13 minutes or until edges are set and light golden brown. Using back of round metal measuring teaspoon, make 1-inch indentation in center of each cookie. Cool 2 minutes on cookie sheets; remove to cooling racks. Cool completely, about 30 minutes.
  • 4
Spoon dulce de leche into resealable food-storage plastic bag; seal bag. Cut off small corner of bag. Twist bag above dulce de leche; squeeze to pipe about 1/2 teaspoon dulce de leche into center of each cookie. Store covered in single layer in refrigerator.

Tips from the Pillsbury Kitchens

  • tip 1
Dulce de leche is similar to sweetened condensed milk, but it has been caramelized, is much thicker and is caramel in color. It can be found near the sweetened condensed milk or in the Hispanic section in the grocery store.
  • tip 2
For best results, bake cookies on middle oven rack, one sheet at a time. Allow cookie sheet to cool completely between batches. Otherwise, cookies will spread too much.
  • tip 3
Try rolling cookies in coarse sparkling sugar to add extra sparkle. Coarse sparkling sugar can be found in the cake decorating section at most grocery stores.
  • tip 4
These cookies should be stored in the refrigerator because of the dulce de leche filling.
  • tip 5
Try placing whole or chopped almonds or pecans or drizzling additional dulce de leche over tops of dulce de leche thumbprints.
