Combining the comforting richness of a traditional casserole with the exotic, spicy zest of tikka masala sauce, this Chicken Tikka Masala Casserole is perfect for any occasion. Whether you're hosting a family dinner or preparing for a festive celebration, this recipe is sure to impress your guests and leave them asking for more.
Chicken tikka masala is an immensely popular dish with roots tracing back to the bustling kitchens of the United Kingdom. While it features traditional Indian flavors, its creation is attributed to South Asian chefs working in British curry houses during the 1960s and 70s. Its creamy tomato-based sauce, fragrant spices, veggies, and chicken have made it a go-to comfort food across the globe.
Authentic chicken tikka masala starts with raw chicken, Indian spices, fresh garlic, ginger, and chili peppers. The mixture is roasted and served over white rice. Our easy, low-ingredient version of tikka masala packs tons of flavor with very little effort. In this biscuit bubble-up bake, pieces of fluffy Pillsbury™ Southern Homestyle Buttermilk Biscuits replace the rice, and jarred tikka masala sauce provides all those great flavors without all the work. Just add in bell peppers, onions, rotisserie chicken, and shredded cheese, then dump into a casserole dish and bake for a meal that’s perfect for a family dinner, potluck, or any occasion.
How to Make Chicken Tikka Masala Casserole
Knock out a few minutes of prep and throw this casserole in the oven for a stand-alone fix-it and forget-it bake that’s different than your average casserole. We’ll walk you through the quick steps here, but keep reading for the full recipe.
Cook the Veggies
While your oven heats up, cook bell pepper and onions in a skillet until they’re nicely browned. The onions should be soft and browned on the edges, and the skins of the peppers should be a little blistered.
Add the Chicken and Sauce
Shredded rotisserie chicken makes this recipe quick and easy. You can use any leftover chicken that you have on hand. Stir the chicken and the jarred tikka masala sauce into the vegetable mixture in the skillet, and remove from the heat. This step is important because you need to cool down the mixture before adding the raw biscuits and cheese.
Cut the Biscuits and Add to Skillet
Open the can, and separate the dough into 8 biscuits, then cut each in six pieces. The easiest way to do this is to cut each biscuit in half, then cut each half into 3 wedge-shaped pieces. Stir the biscuit pieces, a few at a time, into the mixture in the skillet and top with half of the cheese.
Add to Dish and Top with Cheese
Now spoon the mixture into the casserole dish, and sprinkle with the remaining cheese. We recommend spooning the mixture into the dish so that you can create an even layer of the mixture without getting sauce on the sides of the dish, which can lead to burning. Then, bake and serve!
