Our Favorite New Trick for Making Game Day Dips

Veggies, chips and dip
Do Game Day the smarter way with lightened-up dips made with our favorite secret ingredient: Greek yogurt!
By Stephanie Nero

Can you spot the Greek yogurt in this dip?

Veggies, chips and dip

On any given Sunday, you’ll find me noshing happily on Buffalo wings, chips, dip and more. But let’s face it, a season’s worth of Game Day eats can add up, waistline-wise. So, football food pro that I am, I’ve come up with a few tricks for making my favorites just a bit leaner, meaner and better-for-you.

My go-to for Game Day recipe makeovers has always been to swap out sour cream (or mayo or cream cheese) for plain, fat-free Greek yogurt—it’s thick, creamy, tangy and a perfect base for all my favorite party dips.

And the nutrition differences are huge: Half a cup of sour cream contains 222 calories, 23 grams of fat and just 2 grams of protein. But half a cup of plain, fat-free Greek yogurt (in this case, Yoplait Greek 100 Plain) has only 65 calories, no fat and a whopping 10.5 grams of protein.

In honor of Yoplait releasing their new 32-ounce container of Greek 100 Plain (that’s 4 cups—perfect for making a few dips for your next party), I thought I’d share some of my favorite Game Day dip recipes. Their rich and creamy textures make them ideal candidates for swapping in fat-free, plain Greek yogurt (or “FFPGY,” for short). Meet your new Game Day secret weapon!

  1. French Onion Dip
Lighten up this Caramelized Onion Dip by subbing in 2 cups FFPGY for the sour cream and cream cheese called for in the recipe. Or take the ultimate shortcut (like I did above) and mix FFPGY with a packet of French onion seasoning mix for a fast 2-ingredient dip.
  2. Cheddar Jalapeño Dip
This 5-star dip calls for 1/3 cup sour cream and 1/3 cup mayonnaise or salad dressing as a base—making it a perfect candidate for a FFPGY swap. Get the recipe.
  3. Buffalo Cheese Dip
Serve it with Pizza Rolls, or with chips and veggie dippers. Either way, make sure you serve it made with 1 cup FFPGY instead of cream cheese. Get the recipe
  4. Creamy BBQ Bacon Cheese Dip
No one can resist barbecue sauce and bacon—and when you swap out the cream cheese for 1 cup of FFPGY, you won’t have to. Get the recipe
  5. Avocado Lime Ranch Dip
This light and herby dip goes great with cheesy or spicy tortilla chips. Just swap in 1 cup of FFPGY for the ½ cup sour cream and ½ cup mayo called for in the recipe. Get the recipe.
Look for Yoplait Greek 100 Plain 32 oz. at your local grocery store. Find a retailer near you.
