Italian Sloppy Joes are a delicious twist on a classic recipe.  Our recipe for this popular family meal is made quick and easy, using refrigerated Pillsbury™ Grands!™ Flaky Layers Buttermilk Biscuits slathered in a garlicky butter and Progresso™ Vegetable Classics Tomato Basil Soup for the saucy filling.

Sloppy Joes have a fascinating history that dates back to the early 20th century. The original version was made with ground beef, onions, tomato sauce, and other seasonings, served on a bun. It’s thought to be a variation on the famous Midwest loose meat sandwich which became popular in Iowa in the 1920’s. While these sandwiches lack the tomatoey sauce of the traditional Sloppy Joe, they were made from steamed ground beef combined with onions and various seasonings. It wouldn’t be long before the addition of tomato sauce worked its way into the sandwich and that’s how the Sloppy Joe was born. Over the years, the recipe has evolved, with variations that include different types of meat, sauces and buns.

We’re proud to put our Pillsbury twist on a classic family favorite. The tomato basil soup and garlic butter biscuits take your average Sloppy Joe to a whole new level. We think you’ll love the taste, and we know you’ll appreciate how little time it will take you to put a satisfying and delicious meal on the dinner table.

Make the Biscuits

In a small bowl, combine the melted butter with Italian seasoning and garlic powder. Separate the dough into individual biscuits, place them on cookie sheet, and brush with the tops with the garlic butter. Bake biscuits as directed on can.

Make the Filling

While the biscuits are baking, cook the beef, onion, with more Italian seasoning and garlic powder until thoroughly cooked. Stir in the soup and simmer until slightly thickened.

Assemble the Sandwiches

Cut biscuits in half horizontally. Place beef mixture on bottom half of each biscuit, followed by the biscuit tops.

How to Store and Reheat Italian Sloppy Joes with Garlic Butter Biscuits

While these Italian Sloppy Joes come together in a snap, you can cut the hands-on time down even more by making the meat filling in advance. Just make the meat according to the recipe, cool it down a bit, transfer to a sealable container and store in the fridge up to 3 days in advance. Reheat in a saucepan over medium low heat, stirring frequently, for about 5 minutes or until hot. Or, microwave at 70% power in a covered microwave-safe container in 30 second intervals, stirring between intervals, until hot. Reheating times will vary depending on the amount of Sloppy Joe mixture.

The biscuits are best if they’re made the day they’re served, but if you have leftovers, just reheat them in the oven at 300°F for 3 to 5 minutes, or until hot.

You can freeze both the biscuits and the filling. Just thaw the meat filling overnight in the fridge and reheat according to the previous directions. The biscuits can be reheated, straight from the freezer, in the oven although, they will take a minute or two longer.
