Updated Mar 4, 2010

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • About 1 1/2 cups assorted colored sugars or candy decors

Steps

  • 1
Heat oven to 400°F. In large bowl, stir sugar, butter, shortening and eggs with spoon until mixed. Stir in flour, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt.
  • 2
Shape dough by rounded teaspoonfuls into balls. Roll balls in colored sugar until coated. On ungreased cookie sheet, place balls about 2 inches apart.
  • 3
Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until centers are almost set. Cool 1 minute; remove from cookie sheet to wire rack.

Tips from the Betty Crocker Kitchens

  • tip 1
Be sure to use butter or margarine. Whipped products and low-fat spreads contain more water and air, making them unpredictable for baking.
