Flaky biscuits. Creamy peppered gravy. Zesty pork sausage. What’s not to love about classic biscuits and gravy? It requires minimal ingredients and is versatile enough for either breakfast or dinner.

They save time and bake up perfectly crispy and fluffy, allowing you to focus on making the delicious, homemade one-pan gravy. Our foolproof sawmill-style white gravy is made with just a few ingredients, and the whole recipe takes 20 minutes from start to finish.

Expecting a crowd? You can use your 13x9 baking dish to make a big-batch version, like our popular Biscuits and Gravy Casserole or family-friendly Biscuits and Gravy Bubble-Up Bake.

Recipe Ingredients

All you need is a few fridge and pantry staples to create the hearty, creamy comfort of biscuits and gravy.

Pillsbury™ Grands!™ Southern Homestyle Original Biscuits: Our no-fuss refrigerated biscuits bake up golden and fluffy without any fussy mixing or prep. They’re the perfect base for soaking up all that savory gravy!

Pork Sausage: Pre-seasoned sausage is super easy to find, adds tons of flavor, and the drippings create the base for the gravy. If you want to mix things up, you can sub in breakfast sausage or spicy Italian sausage instead.

Flour: This works as the thickener that turns the sausage drippings into a rich, creamy sauce.

Other Ingredients You’ll Need: Milk provides creaminess for the smooth, classic gravy texture. If you use half and half or heavy cream instead, you might need to add a little extra to keep the gravy from getting too thick. And the seasoning is simple: a little salt and pepper is all you need to help bring out all the savory flavors. Want a little extra spice? One Pillsbury user recommended adding a couple shakes of hot pepper flakes and a little onion salt—and we think that sounds delicious!

How to Make Unbeatable Sausage Gravy and Biscuits

Here’s a brief outline of what you’ll need to do to get hot, comforting sausage gravy and biscuits on the table in no time. Check out the full recipe below!

1. Bake the Biscuits

Pop them in a 375°F oven (350°F for dark or nonstick pans), and bake according to package directions so they’re golden and ready to go by the time your gravy is finished. We’re warning you: this recipe goes fast!

2. Brown the Sausage

Crumble and cook it in a large skillet over medium-high heat until it’s fully browned. We like to let it sit for a few minutes at first before breaking it up with a spatula or wooden spoon. This allows it to caramelize a little, which builds even more rich, savory flavor.

3. Make the Gravy

Sprinkle in flour, salt, and pepper, stirring to coat the sausage and create the base for a thick, hearty gravy. Then, slowly whisk in milk, letting the gravy simmer and thicken into a creamy, smooth sauce.

4. Serve and Enjoy

Split open the warm biscuits, spoon the sausage gravy over the top, and enjoy comfort food at its best.

How to Store (and Reheat) Unbeatable Sausage Gravy and Biscuits

Leftovers mean you get to enjoy another round of comfort food later! Here’s how to keep them fresh.

Refrigerator

Store the gravy in an airtight container for up to 3 days. However, you’ll want to store the biscuits separately at room temp in an airtight container or resealable food-storage plastic bag; they’ll get soggy in the fridge.

Freezer

You can freeze leftover gravy in an airtight container for up to 2 months, but we don’t recommend freezing the biscuits as their texture will get soggy and dense when thawed. We recommend you bake up a new batch of biscuits for round 2!

Reheating

  • For the Gravy: We found that the gravy thickens when chilled; adding a little water or milk before reheating helps to thin it back out. Microwave the gravy on High for 1 to 2 minutes, or heat it over medium heat in a saucepan on the stovetop for 5 to 10 minutes. If frozen, thaw first before reheating.
  • For the Biscuits: Reheat room temperature biscuits in a 325°F oven or toaster oven for 5 minutes until they’re hot and crisped again.
