The Doughboy's Favorite Cookie Ever: Peanut Butter Blossoms

Created November 5, 2019
Peanut Butter Blossoms and the Pillsbury Doughboy
When you’re 8 ¾ inches tall (with hat), weigh 14 ounces and are literally doughy, you love a good underdog story. One where the little guy comes out on top.
When it comes to our Peanut Butter Blossoms, there’s the classic recipe, and then there’s our easy version. Either way, these cookies are pretty much perfect!
Peanut Butter Blossoms

The Peanut Butter Blossom is hands-down the Doughboy’s favorite cookie ever. It was invented by accident when Freda Smith was out of chocolate chips and substituted Hershey’s Kisses (and Doughboy, are we glad she did!). What began as a runner-up in the 1957 Pillsbury Bake-Off® Contest has over the years become an American icon.

With more than 195 reviews and a 5-star rating on Pillsbury.com, it’s clear this cookie is here to stay. Pro tip: While chocolate kisses are the most traditional candy for blossom cookies, you can press in mini peanut butter cups, caramel-filled chocolate candies or large candy-coated chocolates for some variety (Just know that the warm cookies may crack a little more when you press in the chocolate candies!).

Even better, these tasty scratch cookies can be made ahead! To freeze: Cool cookies completely, about 1 hour or until chocolate is set. Place cookies in airtight container in single layer between parchment or waxed paper; cover. Freeze up to 2 months. To thaw, let stand, uncovered at room temperature for 1 to 2 hours.

Quick Peanut Butter Blossoms

With just three ingredients, Pillsbury™ refrigerated peanut butter cookies, sugar and Hershey’s® Kisses®, these cookies are the oh-so-simple counterpart to the 1957 Bake-Off® classic. By using Pillsbury™ peanut butter cookie dough, you’ll save a few more minutes of time and effort (and have a shorter grocery list, too!). More than 220 Pillsbury bakers have rated this recipe for its ease and taste.

Similar to the traditional scratch Peanut Butter Blossoms above, you can experiment with different candy toppings with this recipe as well. Also, if you want to give your cookies a more special, holiday-inspired look, roll them in coarse sparkling sugar before baking. They’ll look like they’re sparkling like fresh snow, and they’ll taste just as good as the original.
