Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • 2/3 cup apple juice
  • 1/3 cup cider vinegar
  • 4 cups shredded red cabbage
  • 1 (1-lb.) fully cooked smoked kielbasa sausage ring

Steps

  • 1
Melt butter in large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion; cook and stir 3 minutes or until tender.
  • 2
Add brown sugar, apple juice and vinegar; mix well. Add cabbage. Reduce heat to medium-low; cover and cook 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • 3
Place sausage over cabbage. Cover; cook 10 to 15 minutes or until cabbage is tender, turning sausage once. Uncover skillet; cook 15 to 20 minutes or until most of liquid is absorbed. Cut kielbasa into serving-sized pieces.

Tips from the Pillsbury Kitchens

  • tip 1
Cabbage is an excellent source of vitamin C, an antioxidant which helps keep body cells healthy. Along with broccoli and cauliflower, cabbage is a cruciferous vegetable. Eating vegetables from this group may help individuals reduce their risk of cancer.
  • tip 2
Vinegar is sometimes added to red cabbage dishes because acidic ingredients help some red fruits and vegetables retain their color.
