Consider this a blank canvas for your next pulled pork adventure. This Slow-Cooker Shredded Pork recipe uses very simple seasonings, so it can be customized to whatever strikes your fancy! However you personalize this recipe for Slow-Cooker Shredded Pork, stick to this method for succulent, moist results every time. Not only is it pretty much foolproof, cooking the pork in a slow cooker allows you to do the bulk of the “work” while you’re running errands, at work, etc. Once you’ve removed and shredded your pork, you can use the remaining cooking liquid in the slow cooker as a sauce—just strain it and use it to moisten your pulled pork, use it as an au jus, or thicken it to use as a gravy.

Recipe Ingredients

Salt and Sugar: This super-simple rub is all about balance. Salt is a flavor booster and helps keep the pork super moist while it cooks, and sugar balances the salt with a little depth. The additional spices give an earthiness and a bit of sharpness.

Pork Shoulder: A 3- to 4-pound boneless pork shoulder is our choice here. It fits perfectly in the slow cooker and cooks in the ideal amount of time. If your pork shoulder comes tied, that’s ok, but it’s not necessary.

Progresso™ Classic Chicken Broth: A bit of broth in the bottom of the slow cooker ensures that your pork will stay moist while cooking. As a bonus, you can use that flavor-packed liquid as a sauce once the pork has finished cooking.

Other Ingredients You’ll Need: Pepper, garlic powder, onion powder.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 boneless pork shoulder (3-4 lb)
  • 1/2 cup from 1 carton (32 oz) Progresso™ Classic Chicken Broth

Instructions

  • Step
    1

In a bowl, mix together the salt, brown sugar, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder until well combined.

  • Step
    2

Rub the seasonings onto the meat until all the rub is adhered to the surface of the pork.

  • Step
    3

Place the pork in a 6-quart (or larger) slow cooker. If your pork shoulder has a fat cap, make sure the pork is sitting with the fat cap on top. The fat will baste the meat as it cooks. Pour the broth into the slow cooker around the pork.

  • Step
    4

Cook the pork on Low, covered, for 6 hours, until it shreds easily with a fork. Remove the pork from the slow cooker, and let it rest for 15 minutes.

  • Step
    5

Shred the pork into bite-sized pieces with 2 forks or clean hands. Remove any large pieces of fat or gristle as you go. Enjoy as simply seasoned, or add your sauce of choice.
