Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups firmly packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup margarine or butter, softened
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups All Purpose or Unbleached Flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup chopped dates
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • 1 tablespoon powdered sugar

    Heat oven to 350°F. Grease 13x9-inch pan. In large bowl, combine brown sugar and margarine; beat until light and fluffy. Add vanilla and eggs; blend well.

    Lightly spoon flour into measuring cup; level off. Add flour, baking powder, nutmeg and salt; mix well. Stir in dates. Spread batter in greased pan. Sprinkle with pecans.

    Bake at 350°F. for 18 to 28 minutes or until set and golden brown. Cool 1 hour or until completely cooled. Sprinkle with powdered sugar. Cut into bars.
