Sloppy Joes have a fascinating history that dates back to the early 20th century. The original version was made with ground beef, onions, tomato sauce, and other seasonings, served on a bun. It’s thought to be a variation on the famous Midwest loose meat sandwich which became popular in Iowa in the 1920’s. While these sandwiches lack the tomatoey sauce of the traditional Sloppy Joe, they were made from steamed ground beef combined with onions and various seasonings. It wouldn’t be long before the addition of tomato sauce worked its way into the sandwich and that’s how the Sloppy Joe was born. Over the years, the recipe has evolved, with variations that include different types of meat, sauces and buns.
