Caramelized onion adds a distinctive flavor this creamy dip - a perfect appetizer.

1/4 cup butter or margarine

medium sweet onion, chopped
1
medium red onion, chopped

tablespoons balsamic vinegar

cup sour cream
1
package (8 oz) cream cheese, softened
2
tablespoons chopped fresh chives
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Additional chopped fresh chives, if desired

Steps

  • 1 In 12-inch skillet, melt butter over medium-low heat. Cook onions in butter 15 to 20 minutes, stirring frequently, until very soft and light golden brown. Add vinegar; cook 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Remove from heat; cool completely, about 20 minutes.
  • 2 In medium bowl, mix sour cream, cream cheese, 2 tablespoons chives, the salt and pepper. Stir in caramelized onions. Serve immediately or refrigerate until serving time. Garnish with additional chives.
