Dark sweet cherries and robust merlot wine are sweetened with citrusy orange flavored syrup and frozen to make a refreshing flavored ice - a delightful cool dessert.

Ingredients

1
cup water
1/4
cup sugar
1
cup ice cubes
1
large navel orange
1
cup fresh or frozen pitted dark sweet cherries
1
cup merlot wine

Steps

  • 1 In small saucepan, heat water and sugar to boiling; reduce heat. Simmer uncovered 3 minutes. Remove from heat; stir in ice cubes.
  • 2 Meanwhile, grate orange and squeeze juice to measure 1 tablespoon peel and 1/2 cup juice; set aside.
  • 3 In blender, place cherries and sugar syrup. Cover; blend on high speed 1 minute or until smooth, stopping as necessary to scrape down sides. Stir in orange peel, orange juice and wine.
  • 4 Pour mixture into 8-inch square (2-quart) glass baking dish. Cover; freeze 8 hours or until firm. Before serving, scrape mixture with fork until fluffy.

Expert Tips

For a nonalcoholic version, use 1 cup black cherry juice or nonalcoholic red wine in place of the merlot.
