Expert Tips

If you don't have leftover ham, purchase deli baked ham for this recipe and ask that it be cut into 1/2-inch slices. Then just cut each slice into 1/2-inch pieces.

This recipe is a family favorite! I add more carrots & ham --including a chunk of seasoning ham for you Southerners-- to create a thicker stew. I also use pearl onion, left whole instead of regular onion. Dish must be served with fry baked cornbread! Excellent reheat dish as well.

I didn't have any ham so I made the vegetarian version. I also added approximately a TBSP of each: garlic powder, garlic salt, onion powder, black pepper & powdered chicken bouillon. I would advise to omit half of the celery unless you really, really like the taste of celery. It was a good comfort food and a nice lentil recipe.
