Directions

  • 1 In deep heavy 3-quart saucepan, heat oil to 350°F.
  • 2 Meanwhile, remove dough from can; do not unroll. Cut dough into 12 (1-inch) slices. Cut each slice in half crosswise to make 24 pieces. Roll each piece into ball; set aside.
  • 3 In small brown paper bag (lunch bag), mix sugar and cinnamon.
  • 4 Carefully place dough balls into hot oil; cook about 30 seconds or until light golden brown. Using wire skimmer or metal slotted spoon, transfer doughnuts to paper bag with sugar-cinnamon. Fold top of bag over; shake until doughnuts are coated. Serve warm.

You can use a deep fryer instead of a saucepan.

Use a candy/deep fry thermometer to be sure your oil is at the correct temperature.

This recipe is very good. In response to what to do with the oil. The best thing to keep used oil fresh is to peel a small potato and cut up like French fries and fry while oil is still hot. You can even do this after frying fish and it will take out the fish taste. Promise. It will make your oil fresh and less expensive if you do this after each deep frying.

Hi, Regarding the used oil from frying the doughnut bites. You can use the oil over and over. Strain out any crumbs and store in the fridge. When it is not usable anymore I put mine in a can and place it in the freezer. When garbage collection day comes I put the can in a zip lock baggie and place it in the outside garbage can for collection. No chance for it to spill and make a real mess. Hope the suggestion helps.

I've often seen these from biscuits or rolls. Is there any major difference using the pizza dough or do they all taste about the same and it's just a matter of using what you have on hand?

I've made these donuts using biscuits since my kids were small some 30+ years ago. And in addition to the cinnamon and sugar coating, I also coat them using powdered sugar in a brown paper bag or dip half of a donut in chocolate frosting. Yumm. Just like Dunkin Donuts.

Back in the 60's at Blue Bird camp we used a large crisco can on the stove to cook the donuts. I'm sure they are not as healthy but it sure worked well. Best cleaner1
