A chili-topped hot dog smothered in melty cheese AND made into a crescent-topped casserole? Count us in! This new and improved recipe is a game-changer. We listened to your comments and created a new chili cheese dog casserole that really wows; we dare say it’s now one of our best casserole recipes ever! A flavor-packed filling, two types of melty cheese, and a surprise crunchy topping make this casserole feel brand new.

Recipe Ingredients

Here’s a look at what you’ll need to make this casserole.

Chili: Chili is the bulk of the filling, so use a quality one! We like no beans for a traditional chili-dog vibe, but beans are fine if you prefer.

Hot Dogs: Slice the hot dogs into small pieces so they distribute evenly into the filling.

Kraft™ Velveeta™ Prepared Cheese Product: These cubes of cheese melt into the filling while the casserole bakes, lending signature flavor and creamy texture.

Pillsbury™ Original Crescent Dough Sheet: A crescent sheet makes topping this casserole simple, but if you have crescent rolls on hand instead, just pinch together the seams before laying it on top of the filling.

Tortilla Chips: Crunched up tortilla chips give so much exciting texture to this casserole. Don’t skip!

Cheddar Cheese: Cheddar sprinkled on top for the final minutes of baking offers a traditional cheese flavor, which pairs perfectly with the cheese in the filling.

Other Ingredients You’ll Need: Olive oil, yellow onion, salt, garlic, mustard, green onion.

How to Make Chili-Cheese Dog Crescent Casserole

1. Make the Filling

Soften the onions and garlic; then, add the rest of the filling ingredients. Heat for a few minutes to meld the flavors.

2. Assemble the Casserole

Add the cheese cubes and the filling to the baking dish. Then, gently lay the dough sheet over the top of the filling. Stretch it lightly so it covers the entire surface if needed.

3. Top and Bake

Sprinkle the crushed tortilla chips and cheddar cheese over the top of the casserole for a melty, toasty topping.

4. Serve

Let the casserole cool for a few minutes. Sprinkle the green onions over for flavor and freshness; then, serve your creation!

How to Store (and Reheat) Chili-Cheese Dog Crescent Casserole

Here’s how to store any leftovers.

Refrigerator

Refrigerate any leftovers covered tightly in the baking dishpan, or place individual portions in an airtight food storage container for 3 to 4 days.

Freezer

We don't recommend storing this casserole in the freezer.

Reheating

To reheat refrigerated leftovers, put the casserole covered with foil in a 350°F oven for 20 to 30 minutes or until the middle of the casserole reaches at least 165°F (use a food thermometer). To reheat individual portions in the microwave, place on a microwave-safe plate, and heat in the microwave on Medium-High (70%) for 2 to 3 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches at least 165°F (use a food thermometer).
