Ingredients

Brownies

  • 4 oz. unsweetened chocolate
  • 1/2 cup margarine or butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Glaze

  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon margarine or butter

    Heat oven to 350°F. Grease 13x9-inch pan. In small saucepan over low heat, melt chocolate and 1/2 cup margarine, stirring constantly until smooth. Remove from heat; cool 10 minutes or until slightly cooled.

    In medium bowl, combine sugar, vanilla and eggs; beat until light and fluffy. Add flour, salt and chocolate mixture; blend well. Spread in greased pan.

    Bake at 350°F. for 30 to 38 minutes. DO NOT OVERBAKE. Cool 1 hour or until completely cooled.

    In small saucepan, melt glaze ingredients over low heat, stirring constantly until smooth. Drizzle glaze over cooled brownies. Let stand until set. Cut into bars.

  • This is the purist's back-to-basics brownie at its best - just smooth, rich chocolate with no nuts or other distractions. You can even skip the glaze, if you like.
  • Remove brownies from the oven while they are still barely moist in the center. They will continue to firm up as they sit on the countertop.
  • Brownies freeze very well. Wrap them individually in plastic wrap, then pop a bunch into a heavy-duty freezer bag. Defrost in the microwave for a quick cure when the next chocolate emergency strikes.
