In 3 1/2- to 6-quart slow cooker, combine onions and margarine. Cover; cook on high setting for 30 to 35 minutes or until onions begin to slightly brown around edges.
  • 2
In small bowl, blend flour, sugar, pepper and Worcestershire sauce until smooth. Stir flour mixture and broth into onions.

Cover; cook on low setting for 7 to 9 hours or on high setting for 3 to 4 hours.
  • 4
About 10 minutes before serving, place bread slices on broiler pan. Sprinkle with mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses. Broil 5 to 6 inches from heat for about 3 minutes or until cheese is melted. Top individual servings of soup with 1 slice cheesy bread.

Expert Tips

  • If you don't have the 14-oz. cans of broth on hand, you can use three 10 1/2-oz. cans of condensed beef broth with 2 1/2 soup cans of water. Or add 7 cups water with 7 beef-flavor bouillon cubes or 2 heaping tablespoons of beef-flavor instant bouillon.
  • We recommend using sweet onions or a combination of sweet and red onions for best flavor.
  • Swap the mozzarella cheese for your favorite melty cheese, such as provolone, Swiss or Gruyère.
  • Use baked Pillsbury™ French bread for this recipe.
  • You can brown the onions in a skillet before adding them to the slow cooker, if desired. In a large nonstick pan, melt the margarine over medium-high heat. Stir in onions to coat with margarine. Cook uncovered 10 minutes, stirring every 3 to 4 minutes. Reduce heat to medium-low. Cook uncovered 35 to 40 minutes longer, stirring well every 5 minutes, until onions are deep golden brown (onions will shrink during cooking). Add cooked onions to slow cooker, then continue with recipe directions.
