Helen Weston´s 1951 Grand Prize winner uses a unique technique: some of the frosting is blended with the cake batter before it´s baked, yielding a superbly moist, rich cake.

At high altitude, there is one adjustment to the recipe: use 1-1/2 cups frosting in the cake batter. My family likes a stronger chocolate flavor so I use 1 cup unsweetened cocoa and reduce the flour to 1-3/4 cups flour. I found there was hardly enough frosting for this cake so I increased the recipe by 75%, for example, instead of 6 cups of powdered sugar, use 10-1/2 cups.

My mother made this cake for my birthday every year, starting in 1951. It was somethig I looked forward to. Since my birthday is the day after Halloween, I wanted this cake fore than candy! She passed away 20 years ago. I am going to make this cake for my 70th birthday in memory of her.

This was my Mom's go-to birthday cake recipe when I was growing up. I still remember her baking it for my brother and for me. It's become my cousin's family's favorite birthday cake too! His wife just made it for their son, I got to try a slice and it was just as yummy as I remember. Thanks Mom, thanks cousin Joyce, thanks Helen Weston and Pillsbury.

My late mother used to make this cake for me every birthday when I was a child. I was 70 last fall and she has been dead almost 14 years. It was always a special treat for a special day.

Excellent firm, dense cake, not dry. The mint flavoring was just enough not to overpower. It was a bit hit at my dinner club's 1950's retro themed evening. I give it 4 stars.

My mother and I made this cake the year it won the bake-off and it has been a family favorite since then! It is so moist and not too sweet, and is a frequent "birthday" cake request. Try it!

We have made this cake numerous times over the years, most recently this past weekend for a birthday celebration. It is a family favorite, usually requested by my husband or one of the children for birthdays. I got it originally as a copy for a recipe page from my mother-in-law who at one time had the cookbook. She told me at the time it was a favorite of my husband's.

I encountered this cake in 1952, when my mom made it for my 7th birthday. For years after that I insisted this cake and only this cake was suitable for my birthday cake. I recently, thanks to this website rediscovered the cake and made it with adjustments for elevation. It's still wonderful after all these years!

This cake has been a favorite of our family for many years. It is so easy to make and so moist. I haven't met anyone that didn't love it and ask for the recipe.
