This recipe is an enormous foo-pa!!! not enough meat or veggies!! the best part was the pie crust! need to go back to the drawing board on this one--- better still, just toss it!!!!

I was very disappointed with this meal....It did not look the same and the soup had very, very little meat or veg in it. Was very unhappy :(

Recipe reviews have said a lot about this cozy pot pie. We've added a lot of recipe tips to help out - like you can use beef broth or red wine instead of the beer. There are two pot pies - you spread the mashed potatoes over the two crusts. The dry potatoes are mixed in with the soup and that gets spooned over the potatoes on the crust. Hope this makes it simpler to prepare.

My family thought it was good. I traded beef stew and beef broth for the soup & beer. Didn't add dry flakes to stew it would be too thick. Used leftover mashed potatoes as the base. Does need additional spice/herbs. I will make this again with additional tweeking.

After seeing the other reviews I was a little worried about this recipe so I doctored it up. I used beef broth instead of beer and I added a can of mixed veggies. I also used 2 cans of soup. I added garlic, rosemary, pepper & cayenne pepper to the soup mixture. I made it just like a double crust pie instead of like the recipe. And instead of the egg wash I brushed the top with garlic butter after it was done cooking. This made it very good! I will keep this recipe now.

It wasn't bad. I used beef broth instead of beer. Even my picky kids cleaned their plates. Would be better with real mashed potatoes and more meat/veggies...maybe beef stew instead of soup?

One lesson I learned years ago...NEVER make a recipe with any wine or beer that you don't like to drink. If you don't like to drink stout (I don't) substitute with beef stock.

The end result does not look like the picture. I would not make this again. The crust did look pretty when baked, but the inside was like eating just a bunch of mushy stuff. There is just not enough meat or vegetables in the canned soup. Maybe, if you put your own homemade soup would be much better and less mashed potatoes.

I wouldn't use beer or wine, maybe beef stock if that 1/2 cup liquid is really needed.
I would use left over beef or even canned beef and canned veggies as others have suggested. Soup? No thanks, if I want soup I make great homemade soup and it has 90% less sodium than the canned versions.

I too made this for my husband and I for dinner; I have to agree with the comments made by Susan Richardson. Although a good recipe the stout is too strong and almost makes the soup mixture taste bitter. I would suggest a nice sherry or red wine would be much better. Susan also suggested a leftover roast and a can of veg-all be added to the soup mixture. Leave the soup out of it entirely and just make a small stew using 2C water with 2T cornstarch for thickening; otherwise it's an easy recipe.
