Directions

  • 1 Heat oven to 350°F. Spray large cookie sheet with Crisco® Original No-Stick Cooking Spray. Place both loaves of dough, seam sides down and 3 inches apart, on large cookie sheet. Using sharp knife, cut 4 or 5 diagonal slashes (1/2 inch deep) on top of each loaf. Bake 22 to 26 minutes or until golden brown.
  • 2 Meanwhile, in 12-inch skillet, heat oil and butter over medium heat. Add onion; cook 15 to 18 minutes, stirring occasionally, until tender. Stir in broth and beef; cook 4 minutes. Remove from heat.
  • 3 In small bowl, mix mayonnaise, chipotle chiles, lime juice and pepper.
  • 4 When bread is done baking, set oven control to broil. Cut each loaf in half horizontally, cutting to but not completely through one long side; place cut sides up on cookie sheet. Spread 1/2 cup mayonnaise mixture over cut sides of each loaf. Using slotted spoon, remove beef and onion from broth mixture, reserving broth mixture. Top each loaf with half of the beef and onion; top with cheese.
  • 5 Broil with tops 6 inches from heat 2 to 3 minutes or until bread is lightly toasted. Cut each sandwich into 3 pieces. If desired, skim fat from broth mixture and serve broth with sandwiches for dipping.

This was very tasty and easy to make. I didn't use as much mayo spread or oil to make it slightly healthier.

I agree with Vanessagsaenz.I'm going to make this recipe this weekend, it sounds WONDERFUL!! But, I always use ingredients that are healthier for my family. Even tho the french bread would be delicious, Sprouts has a hoagie roll that is high in fiber lower in calories and fat, and tastes just like white bread rolls!Plus, I LOVE Gorgonzola, but a CUP! I'll probably use a tablespoon or so per sammy. AND I probably wont eat a whole one, and serve it with a salad. I'm always surprised when people give an opinion on the nutritional info. If you don't want to make it, don't.

Delicious recipe, however...There are alternatives to cut the fat and calorie intake if your trying to watch what you eat. Use fat free mayo instead of the regualar mayo mixed with the chipolte and lime juice for the dressing. Saute the onions in Olive oil, not butter. Use low-fat mozzerella cheese or another white cheese that is low in fat. Yes, I admit the sandwich was out of this world using the original recipe, however, to stay guilt-free, just improvise and you won't have to shoot yourself afterwards.

I have to agree with you TessN.... this sandwich looks so yummy, but after reading the nutritional facts, well.... let's just say I'd like to see my next kid's birthday. Isn't there any recipies out there with taste that won't kill you?!?!

Just read about this sandwich and started to plan a meal around it for this weekend. Just reading about it made my mouth water...then I had to read the nutritional information: 1 sandwich (1/3 of just 1 of the loaves) has 800 calories (2000 is the total for an entire day). 450 calories just from fat and 2370 mg of sodium--YIKES...almost 2 days worth of total salt consumption. So, sad...it looks so delicious--"pouting." Might as well just shoot myself instead of eating this heart-attack sandwich.
