Apple Pie Recipe Tips

For the easiest apple pie recipes, use a Pillsbury® refrigerated unroll-and-fill pie crust. Use a glass or dull metal pan in size that's called for in the recipe; refrigerated pie crusts are designed for 8-, 9- and 10-inch pie plates and tart pans. Soften refrigerated pie crusts for your apple pie recipe according to package directions before you use them. Store Pillsbury refrigerated pie crusts in the main part of the refrigerator (not the door or vegetable crisper). For best quality, use the pie crusts before the "use-by" date on the box. For longer storage, freeze it before the "use-by" date for up to 2 months. When making a bottom crust for apple pie recipe, keep the crust perfectly shaped by easing the dough into the pan without stretching it. Stretched dough always wants to go back to its original shape, so it "slumps" down the side of the pan. Press the crust against the sides of the pan to anchor it to the pan. When baking apple pie, cover the edges with strips of foil part way through the baking time to prevent over-browning of the crust edges.

Garnishes for apple pie recipes are fun and easy! Use purchased ice-cream toppings, such as caramel or butterscotch, to drizzle on top of homemade apple pie. Warm sauces in microwave (heat just to a warm temperature, not hot) and stir to smooth before drizzling over baked apple pie. Be creative with other garnishes, too. For example, toasted chopped pecans or walnuts make a topping that is elegant and adds a tasty crunch. In some areas of the country, a slice of sharp cheddar cheese is considered perfect atop fresh apple pie. If making your own whipped cream, sweeten with two tablespoons of powdered sugar and a dash of vanilla extract. Homemade or purchased whipped topping can be flavored with maple syrup for a rich dollop on top of apple pie. Try a tablespoon or two to start and flavor to taste. A light dusting of cinnamon over a dollop of plain whipped cream is also a treat on apple pie.
