Peppered Steak with Brandy-Mushroom Sauce

Family Ties If you're cooking this finger-licking-good dish for kids and adults, you may want to make this recipe twice. For the adults, simply make as directed, but for the kids you may want to use beef broth instead of the brandy.

Ingredients

SAUCE

tablespoon unsalted butter

tablespoons finely chopped shallots

cup beef broth
1/4
cup brandy or beef broth
1/4
cup whipping cream

(4.5-oz.) jar whole mushrooms, drained
STEAK
1
(13-oz.) beef T-bone or rib steak (3/4 inch thick)

teaspoons oil

tablespoon assorted whole peppercorns, crushed
  • 1 Melt butter in small saucepan over medium-high heat. Add shallots; cook and stir 1 to 2 minutes or until tender.
  • 2 Add all remaining sauce ingredients. Bring to a boil. Boil uncovered over medium-high heat for 15 to 20 minutes or until sauce is reduced to about 3/4 cup, thickened and beige in color, stirring occasionally.
  • 3 Brush both sides of steak with oil. Coat steak with peppercorns, pressing into steak. Place steak on broiler pan.
  • 4 Broil 3 to 4 inches from heat for about 5 minutes or until steak is browned. Turn steak; broil 5 to 10 minutes or until of desired doneness. Serve sauce over steak.
