My mother has baked these since they won the Bake-Off in 1971, and I still love to make them today - especially for church potlucks or family get-togethers. I sometimes substitute a different "flavor" of cake mix, such as German Chocolate!

I made these for dessert and my family loved them. They are very good and gooey. Yum, Yum.

I originally tried this recipe from the Best Of Pillsbury Bakeoff recipes book and found it to be wonderful. It is one of our familiy''s favorite Christmas cookie bars. I decided to try to see if I could find the recipe online this year and there it was on the Pillsbury Bakeoff website. I simply had to tell you how much we like this recipe.

I want to commend Mrs. Hall on an awesome recipe - when my mom found this recipe in a magazine, she immediately made them for all us kids (7 at the time!). It was an instant hit at our house - we no longer wanted pie, we wanted the Surprise Bars!! This has remained a favorite in our family for all this time. My daughter, now 16, was intrigued by the story of how I inherited this recipe, and is writing a paper on it for her Speech class. I just wanted Mrs. Hall to know how far her prized recipe has gone. Thanks!
