Ingredients

cups all-purpose flour

cup firmly packed brown sugar

teaspoons baking powder

teaspoon cinnamon

teaspoon nutmeg

teaspoon ginger

teaspoon salt

tablespoons margarine or butter

cup chopped dried apples
1/2
cup unsweetened applesauce
1/4
cup buttermilk*

TOPPING

teaspoon sugar

teaspoon cinnamon

Directions

  1. 1 Heat oven to 375°F. Spray large cookie sheet with nonstick cooking spray. In medium bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and salt; mix well.
  2. 2 Using pastry blender or fork, cut in margarine until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in apples.
  3. 3 In small bowl, combine applesauce, buttermilk and egg; mix well. Add to dry ingredients; stir just until dry ingredients are moistened. (Dough will be sticky.) Place dough on sprayed cookie sheet. With wet fingers, shape into 8-inch round, about 3/4 inch thick.
  4. 4 In another small bowl, combine topping ingredients; sprinkle over top of dough. With sharp knife, score top surface into 8 wedges, cutting about 1/4 inch deep.
  5. 5 Bake at 375°F. for 18 to 22 minutes or until scones are golden brown and toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cut into wedges. Serve warm.
