Cut V-shaped wedge from top of baguette the length of loaf. Set top wedge and loaf aside.
In large nonstick skillet, heat oil and garlic over medium-high heat until oil is hot. Add beef, onions and pepper strips; cook and stir about 4 minutes or until pepper strips are crisp-tender. Stir in oregano, basil and salt; cook and stir 1 minute.
Spoon beef mixture into loaf. Top with cheese strips. Place loaf on ungreased cookie sheet.
Broil 4 to 6 inches from heat for 1 to 2 minutes or until cheese is melted.* Place top wedge of bread on loaf; cut into 6 pieces. If desired, serve with hot pepperoncini salad peppers.
