I just took these out of the oven! Everything went as planned, except that I needed to add a lot more flour to make the crumble topping. I'm waiting patiently for them to cool so I can glaze them.

I agree with ccaplin - I think the coconut is just optional, it doesn't seem to be a major ingredient in the recipe. I think that frozen blueberries would work just fine without thawing first. I use frozen ones in muffins and they work just like fresh with no defrosting. They would still taste the same.

Interested to see official responses, but here's my 2 cents worth.
@Lmallon88 and Patti_Anne: I don't think you need to substitute anything for the coconut. I think it's just for flavor; so if you don't like coconut or are allergic, I would just omit it. The topping will still be crumbly!
@grannyE: I would defrost them first, but would think they'd be okay.
I think you could also try cinnamon in the topping, and other berries/fruit for the filling!

I want to try this recipe with raspberries, and omit the coconut....what can be substituted for the coconut? Thanks

Really want the answer to both questions... substitute for coconut (allergic to that) and frozen vs fresh berries!

Wondering what you could use instead of coconut? Old fashioned oatmeal?

I am wondering if you can use frozen berries, have them in my freezer.
