Tips & Tricks
With advances in freezing and packaging technologies, you can have delicious vegetable selections even in the depths of winter months.
Add vegetables to soups, stews, casseroles, and any time you need a colorful, flavorful selection on your plate.
Vegetable tips:
- Always wash raw vegetables to remove bacteria, pesticides and other impurities.
- Wash vegetables just before you use them (not before storing them in the refrigerator) to keep them as fresh as possible.
- Use sight, smell and touch to choose fresh vegetables; they should feel firm, look colorful and smell fresh.
- If you don't find what you are looking for, ask the produce manager of the grocery store to order it for you.
- Shop local growers and farmers markets whenever possible for regional specialties and fresh-picked flavor.
- If using vegetables in soups or stews, don't overcook, as they may become mushy. Add softer veggies toward the end of the cooking time for best flavor and texture.
