Rice

Rice is as economical as it is versatile. No wonder it's a common staple found around the world!

About Rice

Spice it up, or serve it plain -- it's your choice when you use rice in any meal. Use it in lieu of pasta or beans in soups and stews, serve it smothered with sautéed vegetables, add it to enchiladas or tortilla-wrap sandwiches, or serve it on the side with your favorite meat, fish or poultry filet. It won't be the star of the show, but it'll certainly be a great supporting cast member!

Tips & Tricks

Rice is a grain that provides food and nutrition to people throughout the world. With thousands of varieties grown world-wide, it is plentiful and considered a staple in many countries.

Rice provides complex carbohydrates with no fat or cholesterol, making it a healthy food choice.

To cook rice:

  • Rice from different areas of the world cook differently and vary in taste, texture and appearance. Follow package instructions precisely.
  • Different rice varieties have different finished properties. For example, some are sticky (easier to use with chopsticks!), and some are drier.
  • Some rice, such as common white rice, offers little flavor on its own but assumes the flavors of other foods with which it is paired, such as chicken boullion or soy sauce.
  • Other rice varieties carry distinct flavors in their own right; for example, wild rice has a natural woodsy flavor.
