Tips & Tricks

Chicken is light, lean and tasty. It is an economical choice to add to soups, stews, enchiladas and scores of other recipes, making it a popular staple on grocery lists.

Tips for cooking chicken:

  • Safety first:  Wash your hands before and after handling chicken.
  • Avoid cross-contaminating cutting boards and utensils by using them only for chicken prep (not for other ingredients, such as vegetables, at the same time).
  • Thoroughly wash work surfaces and utensils immediately after using them for chicken.
  • When refrigerating and freezing raw chicken, encase in plastic wrap or plastic food storage bags to ensure no air exposure. Refrigerate raw chicken no more than 2 days; freeze raw chicken no more than 6 months (less if in a frost-free freezer).
  • Unlike beef, chicken must be thoroughly cooked until juices in the chicken run clear or an instant-read thermometer registers thorough cooking.
  • Chicken is one of the most versatile recipe additions, as it melds with the flavors of any recipe. From spicy Mexican seasonings to cool ranch dressings, chicken is marvelous for any meal!
