@ mommydeax from 3-7-12: perhaps you skipped the step of taking off the foil and cooking an extra half hour -- that browns the top nicely.
this really is a great recipe! I add chives and extra red peppers -- two 24 oz jars, so that every bite has some :)

I hadn't made this recipe is years and came across it while pulling out my Thanksgiving family recipes. I decided to make this as an appetizer for a dinner party. The group loved it and wanted the recipe. One couple took home the few leftover squares...
Will make sure I don't forget about this easy, yummy, crowd pleasing recipe.

This was really delicious tasting, but like some others have said,the bottom crust was soggy. The top was golden brown and crispy like a crescent should be. I think I may have stretched it too thin on the bottom layer of dough with too much dough up the side of the dish. I will do it differently next time and make the bottom layer of dough much thicker. I used canadian bacon in place of the ham and cheddar in place of the american cheese. It was a hit!

Easy to make, and the family raved about it. Fed a family of 4 for the first night, and have plenty of left-overs for a second meal. I did not bake the bottom crust first, and it came out fine.

I made this for a family picnic.. First thing to go! Huge hit! My only question to anyone else who made it.. Did you bake the bottom crust first and then layer ingredients.. It definitely did not cook the way the picture shows.. kind of soggy.. Will be making it again soon for a graduation party (at their request after trying it) and wonder if I should bake bottom crust first :)

Made for Sunday Brunch and had six friends over.....they all now wanted the receipe.....could make this for brunxh, lunch or even for a lite dinner with a salad...thnaks so muchhh...the crust came our perfecctly and golden brown crust.....thanks

I have never given a review on this site, but feel I have to. I am only rating 3 stars because my husband liked it and ate most of it over a 3 day period. What I didn't like (& perhaps it was something I did), the crust never hardened on the top. It stayed quite limp and there was no flavor. Sometimes I like to make a recipe per the instructions first so I know what to tweak. The idea was good, but was missing something- like more of an Italian flavor, maybe like a vinegar/oil dressing mixed w/lettuce after it is cooked might be a good suggestion. With a different bread top of course.
