Ingredients

cup molasses
1/4
cup strong coffee
1/2
cup firmly packed brown sugar

cup butter or margarine, softened

cups all purpose or unbleached flour

teaspoon baking soda

teaspoon ginger
1/2
teaspoon salt
1/2
teaspoon cinnamon
1/4
teaspoon cloves

tablespoons sugar

Directions

  1. 1 In large microwave-safe bowl, combine molasses and coffee. Microwave on HIGH for 1 1/2 to 2 minutes or until mixture boils. Add brown sugar and butter; stir until butter melts. Lightly spoon flour into measuring cup; level off. Stir in flour and all remaining ingredients except sugar; mix well. Cover with plastic wrap; refrigerate 2 hours or until firm.
  2. 2 Heat oven to 375°F. Lightly grease cookie sheets. On lightly floured surface, roll half of dough at a time to 1/8-inch thickness. Cut with floured 2 1/2-inch heart-shaped cookie cutter. Place 1 inch apart on greased cookie sheets. Sprinkle with sugar.
  3. 3 Bake at 375°F. for 5 to 8 minutes or until bottoms are lightly browned. Immediately remove from cookie sheets.
