  • 1 Heat oven to 350°F. Grease 13x9-inch pan. In small saucepan over low heat, melt chocolate and 1/2 cup margarine, stirring constantly until smooth. Remove from heat; cool 10 minutes or until slightly cooled.
  • 2 In medium bowl, combine sugar, vanilla and eggs; beat until light and fluffy. Add flour, salt and chocolate mixture; blend well. Spread in greased pan.
  • 3 Bake at 350°F. for 30 to 38 minutes. DO NOT OVERBAKE. Cool 1 hour or until completely cooled.

Expert Tips

This is the purist's back-to-basics brownie at its best - just smooth, rich chocolate with no nuts or other distractions. You can even skip the glaze, if you like.

Remove brownies from the oven while they are still barely moist in the center. They will continue to firm up as they sit on the countertop.

Brownies freeze very well. Wrap them individually in plastic wrap, then pop a bunch into a heavy-duty freezer bag. Defrost in the microwave for a quick cure when the next chocolate emergency strikes.
