I made this soup last night for my wife, and stuck to the recipe exactly to see how it was. We both really enjoyed it, and it was a nice quick meal for a week night, with very little cleanup needed afterward, which is nice when there's enough trouble keeping the place clean with two toddlers in the house.
I think this recipe would really lend itself well to a camp meal, save for a couple substitutions. The crab meat is expensive, and wouldn't travel well. I think this would also work well with canned shrimp, clams, or even as a possible vegetarian dish with a couple other veggies tossed into the mix. I will be making it again.
