Cranberry Layer Bars

Bake these delicious bars made using Pillsbury® refrigerated sugar cookies sprinkled with cranberries, chips and pretzels – perfect dessert for a bunch.

roll (16.5 oz) Pillsbury® refrigerated sugar cookies
1
can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk (not evaporated)
2
teaspoons grated orange peel
1
egg
1
cup chopped fresh cranberries
1
cup white vanilla baking chips (6 oz)
1
cup semisweet chocolate chips (6 oz)
1
cup coarsely crushed pretzels (2 oz)

  • 1 Heat oven to 350°F. Spray 13x9-inch pan with cooking spray. Break up cookie dough into pan. With floured fingers, press dough evenly in bottom of pan. Bake 18 to 20 minutes or until puffed and edges are golden brown.
  • 2 In medium bowl, beat condensed milk, orange peel and egg with whisk until combined. Remove partially baked crust from oven. Spread milk mixture evenly over crust; sprinkle evenly with cranberries, chips and pretzels.
  • 3 Bake 25 to 30 minutes longer or until center is set. Cool 1 1/2 hours. Refrigerate 30 minutes or until chocolate is set. Cut into 6 rows by 4 rows.

I substituted dried cranberries instead of fresh cranberries & chopped walnuts instead of pretzels. They are delicious. Everyone loves them.

I've modified this recipe and it's become a family favorite. All is the same except I substitute 1 cup DRIED CHERRIES instead of the fresh cranberries (chop the dried cherries in half, and 1 cup CHOPPED PECANS instead of the pretzels. DIVINE. Try it!

I doubled the recipe for a party. To cover a 9x13 pan you do need two packages of dough. I baked it for 20 minutes before adding the toppings. The toppings did not need to be doubled because it was too much. In the future I will double the dough but only add the toppings for one batch - I think the toppings should be halved regardless. The flavor combination is great though - the cranberries are the perfect foil for the sweet chocolate chips.

I replaced the crust; Spray the pan well with Pam first. Mix 1& 1/3C graham cracker crumbs and a stick of melted butter. Press into the pan and then layer all the other goodies. Cook for 25 minutes and cool completely. Super yummy.

I wish I had read the reviews! I baked the cookie crust for more like 25 minutes, so I was very surprised that the middle seemed like it wasn't quite done! They smell heavenly with the orange, but I wish the pretzels were crunchier. They're not the worst of the new recipes I tried this holiday season, but they're still not really good enough to make again.
