Sweetiepie 7174 you cannot substitute canned pie filling for the Granny Smith apples in this recipe. Pie filling is too juicy and will not allow the crust to cook properly. Grannies are firm apples that release their juice slowly as they cook, allowing the crust to brown up right.
I found it took me longer than I needed to to put the crust together, the rools were sticky and needed a lot of llour to roll out. Next time I will roll them out between two pieces of wax paper.

I'm making this now, followed the directions except I used a canned pie filling instead. Cut a slice and the bottom is done but the inside is still doughy! putting back in the oven to try and salvage it. Would it be better to bake the cinnamon rolls first?

This is the best apple pie recipe I have every baked. This has become a family favorite. It's now requested for ALL holiday gatherings.

With the issue of burning crust - why not separate the cooking, blind bake the crust and cook the apples on the stove. Then you can either cook the topping on a baking sheet and crumble over the pie or just do a brief broil once you put it all together. That's my plan

I made this pie for my small group's Thanksgiving dinner. It was the BEST apple pie I have ever eaten. It received rave reviews from the entire group. This is the only apple pie I will ever make now! The crust was delicious and the granny smith apples gave it a delicious flavor.

The pie itself was delicious but the crust was awful... In my 60 plus years of baking, I have never burned a pie before until this one. I followed the directions exactly. Sorry!I'll give it one star for the good taste of the "apple crisp"... because that is how we had to eat it.

Instead of the crumb topping I used a second roll of cinnamon buns and rolled them into a "top crust". My only suggestion-make sure you roll out the top curst very thin....mine was too thick and it really expanded! I did use the caramel icing drizzled over the top crust and it was a nice touch.
