need help interpreting a recipe...opinions?

Does it seem like the ham & cheese should go in the slices that have the dijon/butter or the slices that don't?  Thinking ahead putting it in the slices where the dijon butter is would keep the outsides of each sandwich nice and dry easier to eat, less mess.  However maybe something happens during the cooking to not make it melty and soggy because having it on the outside sounds more like a grilled ham & cheese sandwich, what do you all think?
