What is your favorite part of baking?

Mine used to be the creative aspect of it getting everything carefully, beautiful and picture perfect.  Lately though, I have started using baked goods as activities for parties.  For instance I made the raspberry chocolate brownie cake shown in the video on pillsburybaking.com website and took it unfrosted to a picnic.  I had the kids describe the color of the jelly and compare it to the red on picninc tablecloths then talk about the shape comparison squares & rectangles and how many squares we would make using how many lines.  We used it at a time when they were bored with the other outside activities (or tired).  I love the looks on their faces when they spread the jelly only to an inch from the edge (concentration) or squirt a the line of frosting (pride) to realizing we were making the weave as the tablecloth pattern (delight).  I'm not sure if that's my favorite or the part where the grown ups were so impressed with the taste of the dessert when it's served.

I used to love when people would tell me how pretty or cute the desserts were.  I'm just curious what is other peoples favorite part of baking?

Re: What is your favorite part of baking?

I think my favorite part of baking is trying to make a complex recipe simpler using mixes or refrigerator products to skip steps.  When my guests are impressed at a fancy dessert and I know it took me only a short time to make, it tickles my funny bone.

I often share recipe tips with newly married or inexperienced cooks so they can shine too.  It's a hoot to get tips or suggestions from the kids in the neighborhood also.  It's a lot of fun...especially in the Fall and Christmas seasons.  They are often thrilled that I incorporate their suggestions and they see them fresh out of the oven.

I love how baking reminds me of home, my mother, and traditions.  It is also kind of a symbol of the fall and the holiday season when I tie back my hair, get into the kitchen, preheat the oven, and open up a new super-saver-sized bag of flour.  I love the comfort in that.
