Bitter taste to Homemade pie crust, biscuits and cookies.

I've been making biscuits from scratch for almost 40 yrs., but in the last few yrs I've noticed a bitter taste to them. I've been making pie crust from scratch for the past 2 yrs., my lastest lastnight. They too have a bitter taste to them.

I've gone as far as buying fresh ingredients thinking maybe my supplies were to old although they are stored in airtight containers and usually gone in a month or two after opening. I use the All Purpose Flour. I've even tired different brands and that doesn't help.

I used the recipe from the Crisco can for the pie crust. It doesn't get flakey though. I chill it for an hour before rolling it and I roll it on wax paper on a chilled cutting board. It looks really good and smells great while its cooking, but when I pinch the top of it it crumbles and looks like sand in my fingers.

I use the Hersheys Coco Powder in my cakes and cookies and find them to be bitter also. I'm not the only one in the family who notices this bitterness either.

Is there something that I could be doing or I'm not doing to cause this bitter taste?

Thank you:~}

I have also always made biscuits and crust from scratch and have notice that they don't rise as well as they did in years past, I think it has to do with Crisco and the no trans fats.

as far as the bitterness try using Splenda in your recipe! I do and my baked goods come ou great tasting. My experience has been products taste has change with all this low-fat concerns. Please let me know how you make out.
