Good substitute for Cream of Tartar?

I would like to make a Lemon Meringue pie, and one of the ingrediants for the topping is Cream of Tartar. Im not sure if Im gonna be able to find this in the local grocery store, and I read white vinegar is a good substitute but Id like more opinions! What do you all think?

No problem finding cream of tartar in the grocery store. It's used for Snickerdoodle cookies also. Look in the spice section or the baking powder section. I've always lived in a very small town and can even find it in Mexico.
