Using cresent rolls in place of other yeast dough

I want to make several hungarian holiday treats such as, nut roll, and beles which are filled with several different fillings such as, poopyseed, apricot paste, walnut paste and others.  Instead of making the traditional dough I would like to try something different and use cresent dough.  Has anyone used the rolls for other recipes where a dough is needed?

I have made Poppy Horns using Pillsbury Crescent Rolls and Solo Poppy filling, from the can. The recipe is SoloFoods.com click on recipes and look for Poppy Horns. We think they are very good.

Re: Using cresent rolls in place of other yeast dough

People have been doing this, I'm sure, ever since the refrigerated rolls came out.  Some turn out much better than others.

One that I remember very well are the Magic Marshmallow Crescent Puffs that won the grand prize ($25,000 then) at PBO # 20.   The 'basic' recipe with home made yeasted dough was (probably still is) in many cookbooks - Betty Crocker, etc.

I have not tried the refrigerated crescent sheets or squares .. but would think they would work even better than the crescent rolls .. as sometimes pressing out those 'cuts' works better than other times.   My only drawback, to certain recipes, is that I (and many others) feel that when you make certain things with the refrigerated dough they do not keep or last long.   I'm not sure how they'd work in the poppyseed, nut, etc. rolls ... if you mean to make and give as gifts or serve in a few days. I'd maybe do a quick trial .. and see how it keeps.  Unless you plan to use immediately.  Good luck and enjoy.  These products are great!  But not for everything!

From Libby in the Kitchen's:

I asked our food editor, a long-time Pillsbury kitchens employee, and she brought me a bunch of recipes for pastries made with Crescents. A couple are on the site:

Here are a few I was thinking of that wrap dough around a sweet filling:

Sincerely, Cate
