cooked cereal

For easy, quick breakfast, that's a little different, I snip 3 or 4 dried apricots, a few raisins and snip 2 or 3 prunes or dates, into the water and cook for a few mintues prior to adding the cream of wheat or rolled oats. I also like a dash of cinnamon and add evaporated milk  (about 2 T.) instead of regular milk. Being diabetic, I leave it unsweetened. The fruit makes it sweet enough. My husband adds some honey. Sometimes I make extra to slip leftovers into a zip lock bag and freeze it for another quick, easy breakfast later on. It microwaves well.

Re: cooked cereal

Thank you for sharing Omamcm for sharing! When you re-warm, do you add milk or water again? How long do you microwave it for? 20 seconds? Can you rewarm it in the bag? I'm starting to run in the morning again, and I really like this idea... [:)]

Sincerely, Cate

Re: cooked cereal

Just about 20-25+ seconds, depends on how much is in the bag. Yes, I defrost right in the bag, no extra liquid at this time. When it's thawed out, it should still have some form, not thin and juicy. Then turn it out into a bowl and add a little evaporated milk or half and half to your taste. The water it's been cooked in weakens the milk just a little. We use 2% milk and that makes the cereal too thin, so I use the aforementioned.  I have also used snipped dried cherries and toasted almonds. That's tasty too.

Re: cooked cereal

We are  an oatmeal breakfast couple. Just for a change I put dried cranberries and whole almonds in my small food blender and mix until I have small pieces. I keep this mixture handy to sprinkle on our cereal in the morning. We do not use sugar in our cereal so this mixture adds some special flavor. Sometimes I use raisins, dried blueberries or dried cherries with the almonds. When we are on the road I always make sure I have enough for our cereal and friends- people always enjoy the change. Stir in  some flax for extra good health benefits.

Re: cooked cereal

I haven't tried the flax seeds in cooked cereal, but do keep a bag of flax seeds in the fridge to sprinkle on dry cereal. Flax seeds are especially good for anyone, including kids, that are prone to irregularity.  I will try the seeds the next time I cook cereal.
