Plain and Simple

My husband has to eat plain - he hates onions, green peppers, mushrooms and I get tired of mac and cheese, pizza with pepperoni only, steak and french fries, tomato soup and grilled cheese.

I usually end up ordering out and am tired of it - does anyone have suggestions, ideas on things that are quick and easy and he will eat?  He is like a two year old fussy eater!

Thanks!!!!

Re: Plain and Simple

What I would do is at least 3 days a week make a menu you want and 3 days a week make a menu he wants the other day either go out or have HIM make dinner.  If he does not mind making dinner then let him make more than 1 a week.  At least this way at least 3 days a week you will get someting you like.
Also remind him the meal has to be somewhat balanced, that potato chips or fries do not count as a vegetable serving.
You are right he does seem like a two year old.  But at least a two year old you can reason with!
Friend of mine always told her child, and I passed it down to mine.. "One taste, No face.  This way they would try something, had to eat it with out making thoes funny faces.  Best of all after doing that for a while the kids begin to eat something that they said they would never eat.
Good luck.  Remember it is hard to reverse a trend if he has been doing this for a long time it may take a bit to switch.
The other thing is if you make a meal and he chooses not to eat you can be certain that he will not starve.  He may grumble but he won't starve.

Re: Plain and Simple

The sharing cooking really worked at my house with my hubby after the kids moved out. He grumbled at first but now he really enjoys finding new recipes to try. When my kids were home my stand-by answer when they "didn't like it" was...when I give you a menu and you leave me a tip when you leave the table you can tell me what you want to eat...until then you will eat what is put in front of you.  All of my kids eat just about everything and so do my grandkids for the same reason!

Re: Plain and Simple-Debez

Dear Debez.
Some times people don't like veggies if they are cooked only tender crisp, whick is how I like mine or there are large piesces they can see.  Try chopping onions, bell peppers fine, and cooking longer so they are mushy and get lost in the rest of the recipe.  You still have the flavor.  And to get him slowly acclimated to eating some of your favorites, use a little less of the items he doesn't like.  Hope all this helps. I liked the posts of the other ladies as well.  Good info.  ldbayou

Re: Plain and Simple

Debez, sorry to hear you have such a picky eater!  I would use leftover  meats for tortilla pizzas steak, chicken, flank steak, pork tenderloin, etc.   He can make his own.  I like to use barbecue sauce for the chicken, steak, flank steak, and pork tenderloin, and for a taco meat I like to use taco sauce, then top with your meat and cheeses, when it comes out of the oven, I like to add shredded, lettuce, tomatoes, onion, picante sauce, and sometimes sour cream on it.  they can be nummy!   Flank steak, and Pork tenderloin can be marinated in Yoshida's Original gourmet sauce and marinade.  marinate overnight remove from the marinade and microwave on high for 1 1/2 to 2 minutes then grill over medium heat turning frequently until to desired doneness.  slice thin and serve.  I like to serve with any number of sides.  for chicken I like to season with, salt pepper onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, and either or both ground sage and or ground thyme.  then either saute or grill.  serve with steamed broccoli, or asparagus, and a rice or potato side.  Hope these ideas will work for you and aliviate the Bordom!  If you have any questions regarding any of these or would like a couple recipes please feel free to email me and ask.  I would be glad to share what I have with you.  Good Luck  semigourmet at aol

Re: Plain and Simple

I have an extremely picky eater husband as well!  I was really limited at first to canned grean beans, potatoes, and canned corn.  There is still A LOT that he will not eat or try if he thinks he will not like it...so I trick him sometimes.  I have found ways to cook the food so that he will eat it or disguise it so that he does not know he is eating it. For example;  he does not eat raw or crisp brocolli, but will eat it when I have steamed it until it is limp, but not brown. I know this is not the most nutrient dense way to cook, but at least I get something in him.  He is also more apt to eat and try new things when I wrap it in foil and place it on the grill to cook.  Another thing I do is chop it finely, cook it, and place it in a dish.  For example he HATES onions, but if i chop them enough and cook them really well I can place them in sauces, pastas, burritoes, etc.  When I am 'tricking' him I do NOT let him know until after he is finished what he ate...then he is surprised that he actually liked it!
