The 1970s: Cooking becomes adventurous

Finalist poses with a GE range at the 22nd contest in Honolulu.

International Flavors Join the Mix
Contest entrants began to broaden their experimenting in the 1970s, creating dishes that ran the gamut from ethnic to super-easy. More affluent, college-educated families entertained at home, serving wines with meals that had a foreign flair. Adventurous cooks experimented with herbs and spices.

From Homespun to Natural
On the other hand, there was a hearty, homespun appeal in foods, reflected in old-fashioned cookie bars and sweet rolls, as well as wholesome breads. Bake-Off® Contest finalists used more natural ingredients, including nuts, fruits and vegetables.

Small Appliances Lend a Hand
As more women, and a growing number of men, had less time to prepare meals, recipes using convenience products remained popular. Recipe entries reflected the use of microwave ovens, food processors and other small kitchen appliances as time savers.
