Stow-and-Go Food Storage Tips

Carting meals to picnics, on road trips and more is easy with these packing tips.

Families on the go need mobile meals. Keep it simple and use packing shortcuts whever you can. Here are our top travel tips for food:

  1. Bag it up. Bags are easier to fit in coolers than boxes, so pack what you can in plastic food storage bags instead of storage containers.

  2. Chill out. Save space in your cooler for all your food that needs to be kept cold by packing it with just enough cooler ice packs to last. If you need extra ice for drinks, pick it up just before you get to the beach or park.

  3. Zip it before you flip it. Put any potentially leaky or breakable items in a zippered plastic food storage bag before you travel. Place items securely between other items in your cooler or basket so they stay upright.

  4. Finish it there. For fragile or super-sticky snacks like frosted cupcakes, frost them when you get there. Frosting will travel well in a container, and it goes on super quick.

  5. Freeze it first. Fill reusable large drinking bottles halfway with water, then freeze. When you’re ready to leave for a soccer game or outing, remove the bottles from the freezer and fill the remainder with cold water. Your drinking water will stay icy cold for a long time.
