10 easy tips for outdoor entertaining

Make the most out of your time outside, whether it's a small family picnic or a big community event at a park.

Pick the perfect location. If it's a big event, make sure the place is just what you need. Ask these questions upfront:

  • What are the hours?
  • Is there a shelter available in case of rain?
  • What’s the cost?
  • What activities are available?
  • Will you need a grill?
  • Do you need parking or park permits?
  • Is there running water?
  • Is there a limit on group size?

List it. Sounds like a no-brainer, but who hasn't shown up at a picnic without matches to light the grill? Here are a few more things to add to the list:

  • Charcoal
  • Plates
  • Cups
  • Tablecloth or blanket
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Anchors to hold things down if it's windy
  • Trash bags
  • Paper towels
  • Containers for leftovers
  • Bag for recycling
  • Utensils for cooking, serving and eating

Keep safety first. Toss in a first aid kit that has bandages, antibiotic ointment, first aid tape and anti-itch cream. Don't forget sunscreen, insect repellent and allergy medication, just in case.

Add a few extras. Bring more water than you think you'll need. It may come in handy for extra-thirsty kids or for dousing a cooking fire at the end of the day. Bring a snack like apples or granola bars in case you end up making it a longer day.

Keep it simple. Sandwiches made at home and packed in a cooler are way easier than hauling the grill, charcoal and uncooked meat. Fresh fruit is refreshing in the heat of the day, and it's a healthy menu choice that requires little work.

Pack the cooler. Start with food that is already cold or frozen. Ice goes in first. Put the last items you plan to eat in next and work up, so food you plan to use first is on top. Pack it tight, and keep the cooler closed.

Keep the water cold. Freeze your water bottles and add them to the cooler. You'll have icy cold water to drink and it'll help keep the cooler cool.

Vary it up. Hot dogs and picnics – what a combo. Try some new toppings from our Hometown Hot Dogs collection.

Keep it clean. Remember to pack a trash bag to bring the trash back home if there's no garbage can.
