I recently grabbed a cheap bottle of red wine that I ended up not caring for. It might not have been good for drinking, but it was great for cooking and baking! Leftover red wine adds a little bit of grown-up flavor to this sweet treat. And the easy bar form means you won’t be running back and forth to the oven to swap out cookie sheets.

Start by gathering your ingredients. You’ll need a roll of Pillsbury® sugar cookie dough, a carton of strawberries, a cup of red wine, vanilla and some sugar.

Add the strawberries, wine, sugar and vanilla to a small pan. Bring the mixture to a boil. Continue to cook until it becomes thick and jammy...it won’t take long at all! The strawberries and vanilla enhance the flavor of the wine, while the sugar helps mask any unpleasant bitterness that it might have.

Strawberry-Shiraz Cookies Step 1

Remove cookie dough from the package. Press two-thirds of it into the bottom of a baking dish that you’ve lined with parchment paper. Spread the strawberry mixture over the crust, then crumble the remaining dough over the top; bake.

Strawberry-Shiraz Cookies Step 2

Let the bars cool completely before removing them from the pan. (The parchment lining will help you lift it all out in one piece.) Use a sharp, clean knife to slice into 24 bars.

Enjoy!
