Home made play dough

Can someone help me with the old recipe for home-made play dough?  I use to have it but no longer.  Seems like there was 2, one you baked after creating your sculpture, and another one that you  just stored in a container to stay soft.  Thank you-ldbayou

Re: Home made play dough

This is the BEST "Play dough" recipe ever.
Mix:
2 Cups flour
1 Cup salt
4 tsp cream of tartar
Add:
2 Cups water and coloring, see note below
2 Tb vegetable oil
Using a heavy sauce pan and a sturdy wooden spoon, cook over med-high heat until a ball forms and you can't stir it any more. Knead and store in plastic bags.
For coloring I have used tempra paint, food color and the liquid from the "bingo daubers" that comes in many bright colors.  The only time I ever had a problem was once I used a blue tempra paint and in the cooking it released a very strong sulfa odor.
I have found that you can add more color while you are kneading the dough or if you want to make the dough plain then divide it into 2 or 4 balls you can add dif. colors to each.
Hope this is what you are looking for

Thanks so much Grandma Ikki, I felt you would be the first to respond and so timely.  I think this is the same recipe I originally had.  I will give this a try.  Again, thanks so much.  ldbayou

Re: Home made play dough

You are more than welcome.
Try this.  I/we, my grandson and I made this "slime" this weekend.

1/2 Cup liquid laundry starch
1/2 Cup white school glue
measure ingredients into a bowl and mix together. ( You can use plastic or rubber gloves to mix but what fun is that?)  Continue to mix, mash, smoosh until mixture comes together.  It will seem like it is all stringy and that it is a mess but it will come together.
Pour off any excess liquid and store in a plastic container.  I used a small food storage  container.  This time of year the plastic easter eggs work well if you can find one that seals tightly.  If you want to color the slime food color works well, I add it to the starch mix it in and then add the glue.
By the way if you dont want to make so much just equal parts of starch and glue.  Best measure for smaller portions is the little cup that comes with Vicks Nyquil.  Have fun.!

Re: Home made play dough

I am looking for the one I used with my kids as well - but this one is one I found to be a good subsitute.
1 c. Salt
1/3  c water
1/2 corn starch
1/4 cold water
food coloring

Mix salt and 1/83 c water over medium heat stiring occasionally about 3-4 minutes. Remove from heat; add cornstarch and 1/4 c cold water. Add food color if you want. The dough will be like mashed potatoes. Stir until it thickens and cool. Knead on a board or counter that is lightly dusted with cornstarch.
I found this on the clabber girl corn starch box!
